Antonelli Can Clinch the 2026 F1 Title Early: Austin Date

Mercedes star leads by 84 points as rivals wait until Qatar.

Kimi Antonelli arrives at the Singapore Grand Prix as the overwhelming favourite for the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship,

and the official points permutations now show precisely how soon his coronation could arrive.

The Mercedes driver has led the standings since the Japanese Grand Prix in round three. Following the Bahrain Grand Prix,

staged at Sepang in Malaysia, he holds 320 points, a cushion of 84 over his team mate, George Russell.

The Earliest Possible Date

Seven rounds remain, and the calendar leaves little room for a recovery. According to Formula 1’s own analysis,

the earliest any driver can secure the title is round 18, the United States Grand Prix in Austin on 25 October.

Singapore, a Sprint weekend, cannot settle the championship, even though it offers the largest single-weekend points haul left on the schedule.

What Antonelli Needs in Singapore

The arithmetic is demanding. A Sprint victory and a Grand Prix victory at Marina Bay would earn Antonelli the maximum 33 points available.

If Russell scored nothing across that weekend, the gap would stretch to 117 points, and a strong Antonelli result in Austin could then complete the job.

Lewis Hamilton complicates the sums. The Ferrari driver is third on 214 points and remains mathematically in contention, so his results must also be accounted for.

That is why this route is best viewed as a best-case scenario rather than a prediction.

Understanding the scoring helps explain the numbers. A Grand Prix win is worth 25 points and a Sprint win eight,

which is why Singapore can yield 33 in total. If two drivers finish level on points, the championship goes to the driver with more victories, a tiebreak that heavily favours the leader,

since Antonelli has won far more races than Russell this season.

A More Realistic Timeline

Formula 1’s data team also modelled a steadier outcome, in which Antonelli and Russell keep finishing in their median positions.

Antonelli’s average result this season is first place, while Russell’s is 3.5. On that basis, the earliest clinch moves to round 19, the Mexico City Grand Prix,

Isack Hadjar Furious as Battery Loss Costs Sepang Podium

where Antonelli would build an advantage that Russell could not mathematically close before the campaign ends.

Other analysts likewise identify Mexico City or Sรฃo Paulo as the most probable venues for a celebration.

Why the Chasing Pack Must Wait

Behind Antonelli and Russell, the standings read Hamilton on 214 points, Leclerc on 191, and Lando Norris and Max Verstappen level on 188.

All five challengers remain mathematically alive, but their hopes rest on Antonelli failing to score again while they overhaul his current total of 320.

Even in that extreme case, none could be crowned before round 22 in Qatar, which is why the F1 graphic lists the Qatar Grand Prix against each of them.

A Calendar Under Pressure

A note of caution applies to the later rounds. The conflict in the Middle East has already reshaped the 2026 calendar,

with the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix cancelled and the Bahrain Grand Prix relocated to Sepang.

Reports suggest the Qatar and Abu Dhabi rounds are also under review. Any cancellation could shorten the season and bring forward the point at which titles can be decided,

so supporters should treat all projected dates as provisional until Formula 1 confirms the final schedule.

A Season Defined by Consistency

Antonelli’s position is the product of sustained excellence. He won his maiden Grand Prix in China,

followed it with victory in Japan to become the youngest championship leader in Formula 1 history at 19, and extended his advantage with another win in the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid.

Rivals have landed blows, notably Hamilton’s first victory for Ferrari at Barcelona-Catalunya, Leclerc’s win at Silverstone, and Verstappen’s triumph at Sepang.

Yet none has matched Antonelli’s consistency, and Russell’s retirement in Malaysia cost him dearly.

History Within Reach

The stakes extend beyond 2026. Antonelli turned 20 in August, and a title this autumn would make him the youngest World Champion ever,

surpassing Sebastian Vettel, who was 23 years and 134 days old when he won in Abu Dhabi in 2010.

It would also end a 73-year wait for an Italian champion, since Alberto Ascari won the last of his two titles in 1953.

What to Watch in Singapore

Singapore brings the next big test. Russell must respond immediately, because another lost weekend would effectively end his challenge; he has already admitted his chances are slim.

Hamilton and Ferrari will target the double-header of Sprint and race points, while Verstappen arrives with fresh momentum from Sepang.

For Antonelli, the objective is simple: protect the lead, maximise points, and keep the Austin door open. The championship is not yet decided,

but every point scored in Singapore will shape how quickly the story reaches its conclusion.
