Christian Horner reveals 2013 secret talks at Newey house.
Christian Horner has claimed that Lewis Hamilton approached Red Bull before joining Mercedes for the 2013 season. According to Crash.net, Hamilton asked what it would take to join the team during a secret meeting at Adrian Newey’s house. The story adds a striking new scene to one of Formula 1’s best-known what-if moments, and it shows how close the sport came to a very different grid in the early 2010s.
Hamilton left McLaren at the end of 2012 and went on to build a legendary career with Mercedes. Red Bull, meanwhile, kept its focus on Sebastian Vettel, who was in the middle of a dominant championship run. The newly reported details explain why the two sides never came together.
Hamilton’s Secret Meeting With Adrian Newey
The most eye-catching detail is where the conversation happened. Crash.net reports that, according to Horner, Hamilton met Newey at the designer’s house and asked directly what it would take to join Red Bull. Newey was the mind behind the cars that carried Vettel and the team to success, so Hamilton was speaking to the person who had shaped Red Bull’s competitive edge.
A private meeting at a home, away from the paddock, shows how sensitive the discussion was. A former world champion from a direct rival was asking a rival team’s chief designer about a seat, and neither side would have wanted it to become public at the time.
Helmut Marko’s Concerns Over Sebastian Vettel
Crash.net reports that long-time Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko was apprehensive about the prospect. His worry was the impact a Hamilton signing could have on Vettel. The German won four consecutive drivers’ titles from 2010 to 2013, and Red Bull claimed the constructors’ championship in every one of those seasons.
For a team in that position, there was little reason to disturb a winning structure. Marko has previously said that the places of Vettel and Mark Webber in the line-up blocked any potential move for Hamilton.
The Huge Financial Cost of Signing Hamilton
Money was the second obstacle. Crash.net reports that the enormous financial cost of signing Hamilton ultimately put Red Bull off the deal. Hamilton had been world champion since 2008, which made him one of the sport’s biggest names and a very expensive addition.
Taken together, the concern over Vettel and the size of the bill brought the discussions to an end. Red Bull stayed with its existing drivers, and Hamilton’s path led to Mercedes.
How Hamilton’s Move to Mercedes Unfolded
Hamilton joined Mercedes for 2013 to replace Michael Schumacher, at a time when the team had won just one race in its first three seasons since returning as a constructor. Horner has previously said that he encouraged Niki Lauda to sign Hamilton, reasoning that it would weaken McLaren, a strong rival, and that he never expected Mercedes to become the powerhouse it did.
Marko has told a similar story, saying he saw an opportunity to damage McLaren by helping Hamilton move to Mercedes. The outcome was unexpected for Red Bull. Hamilton won six drivers’ championships with Mercedes, taking his career total to seven, and the team became the force that ended Red Bull’s run at the top.
A Long History of Hamilton and Red Bull Contact
The two sides have been linked before. Crash.net has previously recalled a 2011 Canadian Grand Prix meeting in which Hamilton and Horner held private talks at Red Bull’s offices, a story Horner played down at the time. In later years, Horner said Hamilton was keen to drive for Red Bull between 2010 and 2013, but that having two top drivers alongside each other would not have made sense with Vettel in the team.
In 2023, Hamilton confirmed that Horner had reached out to him, and said that nobody in his own team had approached Red Bull. He then signed a new Mercedes contract before announcing his move to Ferrari for 2025.
The latest claim rests on Horner’s account as reported by Crash.net. It adds detail to a story that has surfaced in pieces for years, and it presents a deal that was discussed seriously before concerns over Vettel and the financial cost ended it.
