Leclerc has noted that Vasseur deliberately dampens those swings, preventing euphoria after a good result from becoming complacency and preventing disappointment after a bad weekend from becoming crisis. In a long championship, that emotional stability is a performance tool.

The most visible of those solutions is the rear wing. This extends to race operations. Under Vasseur, the pit wall has become notably calmer on team radio and in decision making. That calm is not accidental. It is the product of clearer roles, less fear of being blamed for a wrong call, and more preparation for aggressive options. When a strategist knows that proposing an early undercut that could fail but could also win the race will be evaluated fairly, they are more likely to propose it.

A third is how the team handles setbacks. In 2023 and 2024, Ferrari had weekends where aggressive setup choices or strategy calls did not work. The public response from Vasseur was consistently to defend the process and the people, and to frame the failure as information. That consistency is what allows people to keep taking the next risk.

Results, of course, are the ultimate measure, and Ferrari has not yet returned to sustained championship winning form. The midfield in 2026 is exceptionally tight, with five teams often separated by a tenth in qualifying, and small reliability issues with new power units can mask underlying progress. Vasseur himself has said that he is more proud of the team’s willingness to take risks than of any single result, because he sees results as a consequence of that willingness.

There are still challenges. Novel devices attract scrutiny from the FIA and from competitors. The rotating wing concept has already prompted technical directives and clarifications about degrees of freedom and driver influence. Balancing aggressive development with the need to score points consistently remains difficult, especially in a cost cap era where every major update has an opportunity cost. And retaining talent in a highly competitive market requires that the cultural promises are matched by real career growth and technical success.


The Necessary Step

The central insight of Vasseur’s tenure is simple but difficult to execute. In modern Formula 1, you cannot win by avoiding mistakes. You can only win by making fewer mistakes than your competitors while operating at a higher level of performance, which inevitably means you will make some mistakes along the way.
