Lewis Hamilton left Spa Francorchamps with points, some damage, and a very clear idea of where Ferrari can be stronger. In the immediate aftermath of a Belgian Grand Prix that mixed competitive pace with costly interruptions, the seven time world champion looked forward to the Hungaroring and delivered a line that has framed the conversation heading into Budapest.
“A Budapest sono ottimista, questa Ferrari sarà forte in Ungheria,” he told Sky Sport Italia. The translation is simple, the implication is not. Hamilton is optimistic about Budapest, and he believes this Ferrari will be strong in Hungary.
It was not framed as a guarantee of victory. It was framed as a reading of the car, the circuit, and what Ferrari has learned to do better in recent months.
From Spa Frustration to a Different Kind of Test
The Belgian weekend explains why Hamilton’s tone was both measured and forward looking. Ferrari arrived at Spa with genuine pace. Charles Leclerc qualified well and converted that into second place behind Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli. Hamilton showed strong cornering speed in free practice, describing the SF-26 as generally good through the high speed changes of direction, with work still needed in the middle sector and in energy management on the long run to Les Combes and down the Kemmel straight.
That baseline was disrupted. A crash in final practice forced the team into a compressed setup program, limiting the reference data available for qualifying. The race then brought two separate incidents. On the opening lap, contact with George Russell as the field compressed left Hamilton with floor damage that compromised aerodynamic efficiency for the remainder of the afternoon. Later, a pit lane release resulted in contact with a mechanic, an incident that drew a fine for the team and understandably rattled the garage. Hamilton recovered to finish fourth, carrying a five second penalty for the Russell contact, which he described as a racing incident.
Taken together, Spa was not about outright lack of speed. It was about how small operational setbacks compound when the competitive order is tight. That is why Hungary immediately became the reference point. The Hungaroring asks a completely different question of both car and team.
Why the Hungaroring Changes the Equation
At 4.381 kilometers with 14 corners and only one straight of any real length, the Hungaroring is one of the lowest average speed circuits on the calendar. It is often described as a street circuit without walls because rhythm, traction and front end response matter more than top end power. Overtaking is historically difficult. Qualifying position, first lap positioning and tire behavior across a stint carry disproportionate weight.
That profile shifts the technical trade. Spa rewards power unit deployment, low drag efficiency and stability in very high speed corners like Eau Rouge and Blanchimont. Hungary rewards mechanical grip, high downforce generation, a stable rear under traction out of slow corners, and the ability to keep tire temperatures in a narrow operating window for 70 laps.
Ferrari’s SF-26 has been trending in that direction all season. Under the 2026 regulations, which reduced overall downforce relative to the previous cycle and introduced active aerodynamic elements with a much larger electrical contribution, teams have had to relearn how to keep the car balanced when the movable wing elements change state. Ferrari’s development path since the spring has focused on aerodynamic efficiency in high downforce configurations, improved correlation between simulator and track, and more predictable rear tire management.

Ferrari’s work on energy recovery and deployment mapping, which was a weakness in the early part of 2025 and in the opening rounds of 2026, has become more consistent. Hamilton has often been strongest in Hungary when the car required careful balancing between front bite and rear stability. In his Mercedes years, some of his most complete weekends in Budapest came when the car was not the fastest in a straight line but could be placed exactly where he wanted it through the long middle sector from Turn 4 through Turn 11, a sequence where understeer in one corner creates oversteer in the next if the platform is not right.

Expect Ferrari’s Friday program to be highly structured. The first runs will likely establish a baseline high downforce configuration with conservative energy deployment, focused on understanding how changes to front flap angle and rear beam wing loading affect balance through the long Turn 4 and the tricky braking for Turn 6. Pirelli’s allocation also matters. In high ambient temperatures, which are common in late July in the Budapest area, the softest compounds can overheat quickly if the car slides. Ferrari has made progress this season in keeping rear surface temperatures under control without sacrificing warm up on the front axle, a balance that was a weakness last year. That will be tested again on long runs, where the SF-26 will need to show it can keep pace without pushing the rear tires outside their window.

A strong result in Hungary does not erase a 45 point deficit, but it does shape momentum heading into the summer break. None of that is guaranteed. Mercedes remains the benchmark, particularly in qualifying trim and in how it manages energy deployment out of low speed corners. McLaren and Red Bull have both shown flashes of high downforce pace, and the midfield is close enough that a small setup error can leave a top team starting seventh or eighth, which at the Hungaroring can ruin an afternoon.
Hamilton’s optimism is therefore best read as conditional belief rather than prediction. The characteristics of the Hungaroring align with the strengths Ferrari has developed. The car has shown it can be kind to its tires, it can generate consistent downforce in medium speed corners, and it can be balanced to give a driver confidence to attack a qualifying lap that never really stops turning. Whether those strengths are realized depends on the work that happens before qualifying, on the details of pit stops and strategy, and on avoiding the kind of small errors that defined Spa.
For a team that has spent the last 18 months rebuilding its operational standards while simultaneously adapting to a new driver lineup and a new regulation set, that is a demanding but realistic brief. The Hungaroring will not reward the team with the most power or the most downforce in absolute terms. It will reward the team that finds the narrow window where everything works together and then executes without interruption.
That is the opportunity Hamilton identified when he said this Ferrari will be strong in Hungary. The next three days of running will determine whether preparation and discipline allow that strength to be seen where it matters, on the timesheets and ultimately on the scoreboard heading into the summer break.
