As the European leg of the 2026 Formula 1 season draws to a close, the championship arrives in a city that has waited 45 years for its return. From 11 to 13 September 2026, Madrid will host Round 14 of the Formula 1 World Championship, the FORMULA 1 TAG HEUER SPANISH GRAND PRIX, at the new Madring. Built around the IFEMA Exhibition Centre in Valdebebas in the northeast of the capital, the venue will also host Formula 2 and Formula 3, marking the first time since the 1981 race at Jarama that the Spanish capital has staged a Grand Prix.
This is more than a venue change. It is a different model of how a modern Grand Prix is conceived, financed and integrated into a major European city.
From Jarama to Madrid: Closing a Capital Gap
Formula 1’s history in Madrid is brief but formative. The Circuito del Jarama, north of the city, hosted nine Spanish Grands Prix between 1968 and 1981. Those races were often tight, hot and attritional, and they cemented Spain’s place on the calendar before the sport migrated south to Jerez and then to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, which became the long term home of the race from 1991.
For decades a return to Madrid was discussed but never progressed beyond concept drawings. The economics of building a fully permanent circuit close to a capital city, combined with noise, planning and transport constraints, made it impractical. What changed was Formula 1’s own shift in philosophy. Under Liberty Media, the championship began to prioritise hybrid circuits that use existing urban infrastructure, permanent exhibition or sporting complexes, and a smaller footprint of new construction. Miami, Las Vegas and the reimagined Albert Park provided the template.

Madrid’s proposal, formalised in a ten year agreement announced in 2024 and running through 2035, was built on that template. Instead of carving a circuit from greenfield land, the project leverages the concrete assets of IFEMA Madrid, one of Europe’s largest exhibition venues. The result is a circuit that can be built efficiently, operated with existing services, and expanded without relying on direct public subsidy.
Why Valdebebas: A City Circuit With Permanent Bones
The choice of Valdebebas is logistical before it is romantic. The site sits directly alongside Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport, about 16 kilometres from Puerta del Sol, and is served by Metro Line 8, Cercanias commuter rail, and the M-11 and M-12 road network. For a sport that moves more than 1,500 tonnes of freight per event, that connectivity matters as much as the layout.
IFEMA itself provides the paddock backbone. Exhibition halls become team hospitality, race control, media centre and medical centre with minimal temporary build. The runways of the airport are close enough to see from the upper grandstands, which allows for a rapid equipment turnaround for the flyaway races that follow.
Capacity planning reflects that advantage. The inaugural race is configured for approximately 110,000 spectators per day, with all permanent and temporary grandstands, general admission and hospitality counted. The masterplan includes foundations and access routes for a staged expansion to around 140,000, which would place Madring among the highest capacity venues in Europe. Ticket demand has already tested that ceiling. Organisers report more than 120,000 grandstand and hospitality tickets sold across the weekend, with international buyers accounting for a significant share from the United Kingdom, the United States, Mexico and France.
The Anatomy of 5.416 Kilometres
On paper the Madring measures 5.416 kilometres, or 3.365 miles, with 22 corners split into 10 left handers and 12 right handers. Race distance is 57 laps, totalling 308.524 kilometres. The track width is 12 metres through most of the lap, widening to 15 metres on the main straight and into the braking zone for Turn 1. That widening is deliberate, creating a natural funnel and a defined overtaking window.
The design was led by Studio Dromo and Italian engineer and architect Jarno Zaffelli, whose portfolio includes major work at Zandvoort, Spa-Francorchamps and several other FIA Grade 1 homologated facilities. Zaffelli’s brief was to produce a circuit that feels like two circuits stitched together, which is an accurate description of the driving experience.

Sector one is the high commitment sector. It opens on a main straight of about 589 metres, the second longest acceleration zone on the lap, before a heavy braking event into Turn 1. Initial simulations and on board data from early runs put top speeds on the longer urban sections at or above 340 km/h in low drag configurations, helped by Madrid’s altitude of roughly 600 metres above sea level which reduces aerodynamic drag and power unit air density. Turn 1, Turn 5, Turn 11 and Turn 17 have been identified as the four primary overtaking zones, each preceded by a straight long enough to allow DRS and energy deployment to take effect.
Sector two shifts the emphasis from outright speed to mechanical platform and confidence. Here the circuit transitions from the permanent sections built specifically for Formula 1 into adapted public roads and service roads around IFEMA. The surface changes slightly in texture, and there are subtle elevation changes that are more pronounced in the car than on the map. Turn 8, named El Bunker, is one of the most evocative corners on the calendar. The track passes immediately alongside preserved fortifications from the Spanish Civil War, and the corner itself is a medium speed left hander with a late apex that rewards patience. It is narrow, with less run off than a traditional permanent circuit, and it places a premium on positioning for the following sequence.
Sector three is where a street circuit mindset returns. The final third is a series of 90 degree corners with walls positioned closer to the racing line, lower average speeds and a need for sharp front end response and traction. Mistakes here are punished by time rather than gravel, but the proximity of barriers means any lock up or snap of oversteer costs confidence for the next lap. It is also where track evolution will be most visible. The asphalt, newly laid for the project, has been treated with high pressure water jetting to remove construction oils and fine dust. In that condition the surface starts extremely smooth and low grip. As Formula 3, Formula 2 and Formula 1 rubber goes down, grip will rise quickly but unevenly, with the offline remaining dusty well into Saturday.
Pirelli’s compound selection reflects that challenge. The Italian supplier has nominated the C2 as Hard, C3 as Medium and C4 as Soft, the middle of its range. The choice is informed by the load profile of the banked corner and the abrasion expected from a green track, and it suggests that tyre management, especially of the front left and rear left through the sustained lateral load, will be a central strategic variable rather than an afterthought.
La Monumental: Engineering to the Regulatory Edge
Every new circuit needs a signature, and Madring’s is unmistakable. Turn 12, known as La Monumental, is a sweeping semi circular banked corner approximately 547 to 550 metres in length, with banking up to 24 percent. That figure is not arbitrary. Twenty four percent is the maximum banking permitted under current FIA Formula 1 circuit regulations for a new Grade 1 licence. Madring is built precisely to that limit.

It is the longest banked corner on the current calendar, longer than the banking at Zandvoort’s final corner, and it is expected to generate the highest sustained vertical tyre loads of the season. Drivers will spend roughly six seconds in the banking, entering with high lateral load, climbing slightly, then cresting over a blind exit where the track falls away. The visual inspiration is the Spanish bullring, a concentric circular form that also dictates the grandstand arrangement. Around 45,000 spectators will be seated in this amphitheatre section alone, with sightlines that allow the entire corner to be viewed from a single vantage point.
From an engineering perspective, La Monumental is a complex structure. The banking is not a constant radius or constant incline. It is a compound geometry that must manage drainage, accommodate differential settlement between the permanent and temporary foundations, and meet FIA load and safety requirements for barriers, debris fencing and marshal posts on an inclined plane. The construction uses a reinforced base with a specifically designed asphalt mix that can tolerate both high compressive loads and thermal expansion in Madrid’s summer heat. The top layer is polymer modified to resist the shear forces that 900 kilograms of Formula 1 car, generating more than four times its own weight in downforce, will impose at over 250 km/h.
For drivers, the corner presents a unique combination of physical and technical demands. The sustained g force compresses the neck and lower back while the car itself is being pushed into the track, increasing tyre temperature rapidly. The line is not fixed. Early in the weekend the low line will offer more support but more heat. As grip evolves, a higher line may allow for better exit speed onto the following straight. Getting it wrong has two costs, tyre overheating that compromises the next sector, and a blind exit that punishes any correction with a loss of momentum.
Building a Grade 1 Circuit in a Live City
Madring’s construction model explains how a Grade 1 circuit was delivered for a reported cost of around 83 million euros for the racing infrastructure itself, a modest figure by modern standards. Rather than building a full suite of permanent pits, paddock and grandstands, the project reuses IFEMA halls for much of the operational footprint. Permanent works are concentrated where performance and safety require them, the track structure itself, barriers, fencing, drainage, lighting, and the banked corner.
That approach has trade offs. A hybrid circuit must meet the same FIA homologation standards as a permanent one, including run off distances, barrier overlap, medical access and evacuation routes, but it must do so on roads that were not originally designed for racing. Kerb profiles, camber, and surface transitions have been extensively reprofiled. Temporary barriers are anchored to permanent foundations, and all service road furniture has been removed or recessed for the event period.

Noise and environmental licensing were central to the approval process. The Valdebebas area is not densely residential, but it is adjacent to transport and business districts. The circuit’s noise management plan includes directional barriers, limited running hours outside the Grand Prix week, and continuous monitoring. The asphalt water jetting process, while primarily for grip, also reduces the need for chemical cleaning agents.
Proving Ground: From Mustang to Formula 3
A new circuit cannot be homologated on simulation alone. Madring’s validation programme has been progressive, designed to test both the surface and the full operational machine that supports a Grand Prix.
In May 2026, Carlos Sainz, Madrid born Williams driver and official ambassador for the project, conducted the first high speed demonstration of the layout in a Ford Mustang. While not a Formula 1 car, the run allowed for initial feedback on sightlines, braking references, elevation and the flow into La Monumental. Sainz noted that the circuit felt faster than it appeared on video, particularly in the purpose built sections of the first sector.
In July, Ferrari became the first Formula 1 team to run a current generation Formula 1 car at the venue during a filming day with Charles Leclerc. Filming days are restricted to 200 kilometres and promotional tyres, so performance data is limited, but the running provided the first real correlation for energy deployment, cooling requirements and ride height sensitivity over the new surface and kerbs.
The definitive test came in late August 2026, when the FIA Formula 3 Championship staged an official two day in season test with all 30 drivers and ten teams. Formula 3 cars, while slower than Formula 1, generate significant aerodynamic load and provide a thorough test of barriers, marshal response, timing loops, race control systems and medical intervention. Organisers used the test to run the full race weekend protocol, including red flag procedures, recovery and track inspection. Driver feedback after the test was consistent, high adrenaline, low margin for error in places, with some sections reminiscent of Monaco in terms of wall proximity and Macau in terms of rapid direction changes. Several red flag interruptions, expected at a new venue as limits are explored, allowed the operations team to refine recovery routes and barrier repair procedures.
In the days leading into the Grand Prix week, the FIA medical car was observed completing laps of the completed circuit, a routine but important final check of access, radio coverage and extrication points.
Economy, Audience and a Different Business Model
Large sporting infrastructure in Europe is often debated in terms of public cost versus public benefit. Madring’s commercial framing has been careful to distinguish itself from that model. The project has been financed primarily through IFEMA Madrid’s own resources and commercial revenues associated with the venue, rather than a direct grant from city or regional government. The precise annual fee paid to Formula 1 remains confidential under commercial terms, which is standard across the calendar.
Early economic assessment has been conducted by PwC on behalf of IFEMA, using actual ticket sales and contracted investment rather than purely prospective modelling. That analysis estimates an economic impact of approximately 467 million euros for the Madrid region from the inaugural event alone, supporting around 8,850 jobs across hospitality, transport, event operations and tourism, and generating about 83 million euros in tax and social security revenues. More than 80,000 spectators are expected to travel from outside the Madrid region, with about 45,000 arriving from overseas. Those figures are projections, not certainties, and actual outturn will depend on visitor spending patterns, weather and operational delivery. What is already verifiable is the scale of demand. Hospitality capacity of roughly 15,000 places is high by European standards, and the Formula 1 Paddock Club is fully subscribed for the inaugural edition.

The broader civic ambition is to position Madrid as a city that can host a major international sporting event without building a single use district that sits empty for 50 weeks a year. IFEMA already hosts hundreds of trade fairs and congresses annually. A Grade 1 circuit that can be partially reconfigured for other events, product launches and testing creates year round utilisation for roads, garages and grandstand infrastructure that would otherwise be idle.
The Weekend Unfolds
The sporting programme follows the established Formula 1 format with expanded support categories. Friday 11 September opens with Formula 3 free practice, followed by Formula 2 free practice, Formula 1 Free Practice 1 from 13:30 to 14:30 local time, Formula 2 qualifying, Formula 1 Free Practice 2 from 17:00 to 18:00, and Formula 3 qualifying. Saturday features the Formula 3 Sprint, Formula 1 Free Practice 3, the Formula 2 Sprint, Formula 1 Qualifying from 16:00 to 17:00, and the first Formula 3 Feature Race. Sunday begins with the second Formula 3 Feature Race, the Formula 2 Feature Race, the Drivers Parade and the Grand Prix at 15:00 local.
That schedule matters for track evolution. With two junior categories running significant lap counts, the racing line will evolve rapidly. Teams expect a large step in grip between FP1 and FP2, and another between FP3 and qualifying. The low grip opening hours will make early setup work challenging, as mechanical balance assessed in FP1 may not correlate once the track rubbers in. Those who have experienced new venues before will recognise the pattern, a Friday of cautious exploration, a Saturday of rapidly rising confidence, and a Sunday where strategy must account for both tyre degradation on a green surface and the potential for safety cars at a circuit where walls are close in the final sector.
What It Will Take to Win
Because no team has raced here before, the competitive order arrives without historical reference. Simulation work for Madring has been underway in factories for more than two years, using lidar scans, surface samples and detailed models of the banking. Yet simulation cannot fully replicate the combination of low grip, wall proximity and sustained vertical load that defines this track.
Three technical themes will dominate.
First, aerodynamic efficiency. The long straights reward low drag, but the middle sector and La Monumental reward downforce. Teams must choose a rear wing level that does not compromise exit speed from the final tight corners or overheat the rear tyres in the banking. Expect to see a spread of wing levels across the grid in practice as teams converge on the right trade off.
Second, mechanical platform and energy management. The banked corner will load the car asymmetrically for six seconds, compressing the outside suspension and increasing power unit and battery temperatures. How a car manages energy deployment out of La Monumental and down the following straight will dictate overtaking opportunities into Turn 17. The tighter final sector will test traction and braking stability, areas where recent regulation changes have made cars more sensitive to ride height.

Third, driver confidence. Street circuits reward drivers who can build rhythm quickly and place the car within centimetres of the wall without touching it. The combination of Monaco like proximity in the final sector and high speed commitment in sector one means confidence will be built lap by lap, not sector by sector. Mistakes in practice will be costly, as barrier repairs and red flags will limit running on a surface that is already evolving quickly.
For Spanish fans, the presence of Carlos Sainz as both competitor and ambassador adds an emotional layer. Sainz has been involved in simulator development, grandstand design feedback and public promotion since the project’s early stages. Racing in his home city, a short drive from where he grew up, is a rare occurrence in a career that has taken him through London, Maranello and Grove. That narrative will be prominent, but it does not change the technical reality that every driver will be learning the circuit in real time.
A Measured Beginning
It is easy to describe any new Grand Prix as historic. The more useful question is whether it is credible, sustainable and sporting. On the evidence available before lights out, Madring has addressed each of those tests methodically.
It returns Formula 1 to a major European capital after 45 years without resorting to a fully temporary city centre circuit or a remote greenfield complex. It incorporates a genuine engineering signature in La Monumental, built to the absolute limit of what the regulations allow, rather than relying on branding to create identity. It has been validated progressively, from a road car to a Formula 1 car to a full grid of Formula 3 cars exercising every operational system. And it has been financed and scaled in a way that leverages existing exhibition infrastructure rather than duplicating it.
Whether that translates into a great race will be decided between 11 and 13 September. Overtaking zones have been engineered, but overtaking is never guaranteed. Tyre management will be a factor, but how large a factor depends on how quickly the new asphalt matures. The economic projections are grounded in real ticket sales, but they remain projections until the crowds arrive, spend and depart.
What can be said now is that the infrastructure, regulatory compliance and preparatory testing have positioned the Madring as a serious addition to the championship. Madrid has not merely regained a Grand Prix. It has built a circuit that asks something different of drivers, engineers and strategists, and it has done so in a way that reflects how Formula 1 now thinks about venues, as part of a living city rather than apart from it.
