Bortoleto Unveils Brilliant F1 2026 Rule Defense
Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto has become an unlikely voice of calm in Formula 1’s most divisive technical argument in years. While much of the grid has spent the opening half of the 2026 season warning that the new regulations have made racing artificial, unpredictable, and too dependent on software, the 21-year-old Brazilian has offered a blunt counter: this is still Formula 1, it is still fast, and adapting is the entire point of being one of the 22 drivers on the grid.
His intervention matters because it comes from a driver living the hardest version of the new rules. Audi arrived in 2026 as a full works entrant for the first time, inheriting the Sauber operation and introducing its own power unit at the exact moment the sport tore up its rulebook.
The team has fought for midfield points rather than podiums. Bortoleto, in only his second full season in Formula 1 after debuting in 2025, has been its sole regular scorer, taking eighth-place finishes at Silverstone and Spa-Francorchamps in consecutive races. He has no incentive to romanticize a formula that has left his car short on straight-line energy. Yet his position has been consistent from Miami to Budapest: stop complaining, turn the page, and learn to drive what you have.
What Changed In 2026
To understand the friction, you have to understand what the FIA changed.
The 2026 power unit drops the Motor Generator Unit-Heat, the complex MGU-H that recovered energy from the turbo. In its place is a far more powerful Motor Generator Unit-Kinetic, now delivering around 350kW, roughly three times its previous output. The regulations target a near 50-50 split between internal combustion and electrical power, running on 100% sustainable fuel. On top of that, cars have active aerodynamics front and rear, a reduced overall weight target, and a completely rewritten energy management system.

In practice, that means power delivery is no longer constant. In the previous era, the hybrid boost was a relatively consistent layer on top of a mature internal combustion engine. In 2026, how much electrical energy you have, where you can use it, and how quickly you can recover it changes corner to corner and lap to lap.
The FIA and the manufacturers use predictive algorithms to manage deployment to stay within energy limits. Drivers have a boost button for overtaking, but for most of a qualifying lap and much of a race, the car decides where deployment happens.
The result has been luridly visible at power-hungry tracks. At Silverstone, drivers feared they would run out of energy before the end of the Hangar Straight after using it all through Copse, Maggots and Becketts. At Spa-Francorchamps, the longest lap of the year, drivers reported entire sectors in the middle of the lap with no battery assistance at all, running on the combustion engine alone.
The sensation is strange even for veterans: you can have full power in one corner, half power in the next, and a completely different brake feel as recovery levels shift.
Further tweaks are already agreed. The initial deployment limits were adjusted slightly around the Miami Grand Prix to slow the rate at which batteries drain, and the sport has signed off on a further shift in the power split for 2027 and 2028, moving from the current 53-47 balance toward a 60-40 split in favor of the combustion engine, with increased fuel flow. A full simplification toward a simpler V8 concept is only under discussion for 2031. Until then, the current framework is locked in.
It is against that background that the complaints have grown.
The Chorus Of Complaints
Max Verstappen, after early races this season, described the driving as “really anti-driving” because pushing to the absolute limit in one corner can punish you on the next straight if it triggers wheelspin and wastes energy. Lando Norris, the reigning world champion coming into 2026, called the racing “chaos” and “artificial,” pointing to yo-yo effects in wheel-to-wheel battles where one car has boost and the other does not.
Oscar Piastri was particularly vocal after Spa. He argued that qualifying was being decided by computers behaving or misbehaving. “When qualifying is being decided by computers behaving or misbehaving, it’s a pretty crap way of going racing,” he said.
He added that it sometimes feels like being a passenger of an AI program that still has to be trained, noting that in the middle sector at Spa the cars were running purely on the combustion engine, which made small differences in code worth more than a tenth of a second in a session where four positions were separated by less than a tenth.
Charles Leclerc has explained the paradox of qualifying in 2026: a brilliant entry into La Source can cost you time on the Kemmel Straight because you have deployed too much energy early. Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu went further, calling the formula “just too complicated” and arguing that the sport needs to be simplified so fans can understand it regardless of their technical knowledge.
The underlying anxiety is familiar whenever Formula 1 changes its rules so fundamentally. Drivers worry that the skill set that made them elite has been devalued, that software matters more than car control, and that the raw, flat-out sensation that defined the previous ground-effect era has been lost.
Bortoleto does not dismiss those feelings. He simply disagrees with the conclusion.
“We Haven’t Lost The Magic”
His first public pushback came after the British Grand Prix. After finishing eighth to score Audi’s first points since the opening round in Australia, he was asked whether Silverstone, one of the great driver circuits, had lost its challenge because cars were lifting earlier or managing energy.
“I don’t think we’ve lost the magic of the sport,” he said. “We are still driving f quick through Copse. It’s 280[km/h], so I’m still lifting to do that corner. It’s not that easy flat, it’s not that you’re like, ‘oh, we’re not using all the grip we have’.”
It was a deliberately physical reference. Copse is an eighth-gear, high-commitment right-hander where drivers in 2025 were flat with confidence. In 2026, the reduced downforce and different energy state mean it is a lift and a precise throttle modulation, but the speed is still enormous. For Bortoleto, that still counts as elite driving.
He followed that with a message to the rest of the paddock that has become his refrain.
“Obviously, last year it was a different concept, but I think we should turn the page. That’s the regulations we’re living right now,” he said. “If there are still people complaining about it, just move the page. That’s the regulations we have until 2030, if I understood correctly. And then in 2031, when we go to the new regulations, we talk about it again. But we cannot spend three years talking about the same problem every time, you know, because that’s what we have. The cars are still fun to drive. It’s different. We need to adapt to that and it’s life.”
The point was not that the cars are perfect. Speaking around the Miami weekend, where the FIA introduced its first round of adjustments to improve qualifying and race starts, he acknowledged that everyone wants improvement and that some of the overtakes that had caused incidents were a concern. He credited the governing body for acting. But he drew a line between wanting improvement and refusing to accept reality.
“We are all drivers. We always want to drive the fastest cars possible. I don’t think it’s only them that want to see an improvement on the regulations. I think everyone is aligned on that. Some people are more vocal about it, some people are more careful with what they say.

There is no right or wrong, there is just people’s opinion and I think everyone should be able to give their opinions,” he said. “I understand, you know, coming from a regulation that was like almost perfection, in the sense that cars were well developed, engines were well developed. We were fighting each other on track with pure overtakes and everything and coming to a new concept of regulations this year, I feel like we all need to adapt to that.”
There Is No Such Thing As A Driving Style
Bortoleto’s most pointed argument came when he was asked about driving style.
Esteban Ocon had said during Audi’s own launch period that drivers might have to forget everything they learned since go-karts about how to go fast to be quick in 2026. The idea took hold: that the new cars require a completely alien technique. Bortoleto rejected the framing entirely in an interview with Auto Hebdo that was picked up across the paddock in Hungary.
“I don’t think I changed much my way of driving, but again I don’t like the sentence ‘driving style’, because I don’t believe that a F1 driver should ever say that, because we should be able to adapt, even if it’s not natural maybe,” he said. “But we should be able to adapt to any type of car and the way you need to drive, that’s why we do what we do and that’s why we are the 22 drivers in the world doing F1.”
He expanded on that thought in other conversations. “Motorsport shouldn’t reflect a single way of driving. Just because you learned something in karting doesn’t mean you have to do it for the rest of your life,” he said.
For him, the phrase driving style is a crutch. Every era of Formula 1 has rewarded something different. The ground-effect cars of 2022 to 2025 rewarded aggressive entry speed and confidence in high downforce. The turbo-hybrid cars from 2014 onward rewarded fuel and tyre management. The blown-diffuser era before that rewarded a specific throttle technique. The best drivers in each era were not the ones who imposed their preferred style on the car. They were the ones who erased their preference fastest.
In 2026, that erasure has to happen corner by corner. Because deployment varies, the optimal approach to a corner depends on what happens after it. If there is no electrical energy available on the exit, you can afford to be more aggressive on entry, run a wider line, and get on the throttle earlier because the car will not snap with a sudden torque hit. If there is a long straight with full deployment after, you need to be more patient on entry to prioritize traction.
Last year, that calculation was essentially constant. This year, it changes every lap based on battery state, recovery, and what the software predicts you will need two corners later.
It is less raw, as Leclerc correctly notes. Wheelspin is punished twice: you lose time, and you waste energy that you cannot get back instantly. That forces restraint. But Bortoleto argues restraint is also a skill, and learning where to be restrained is what separates the top of the field.
When that argument was put to Verstappen in Hungary, after Bortoleto’s name was clarified to him, Verstappen actually agreed with the principle, even while still disliking the current feel.
“Yeah, he’s right. I mean, your driving style always needs to change to whatever is fastest. I can drive the cars just saying, ‘this is how I drive it’. Well, I can tell you in Spa, you lose half a second. That shows you how weird it is at the moment. He’s right, you need to adapt. Adaptability is super important.
But that goes for any, like all the series that you’ve raced in, all the way to F1, I think you always need to adapt to what is best for that car that you are driving,” Verstappen said.
The Software Argument
The other flashpoint is whether software has taken control away from drivers. The predictive energy models that decide deployment are more influential than ever because electrical power is now half the total. Piastri’s complaint about being a passenger is not isolated.
Here again, Bortoleto broke ranks.
“We are in Formula 1. We are developing the future technology. If we are not using all the tools that are available in the world for us, in our favour, then I don’t know what Formula 1 is about,” he said. “People used to complain because ‘nowadays the drivers have too much things to do’, now that there is things doing it for us, we are complaining now that they are doing it for us – so I’m happy with the way it’s going.”
“It’s nice that the software is able to adapt itself and understand what and how much energy you are deploying through the lap and how to evolve through the laps, next laps you are doing. I don’t think it should change, if I’m very honest, that’s my opinion.”
His point mirrors how Formula 1 has always worked. Traction control, engine braking maps, differential settings, and even start procedures have always involved software developed by teams that makes both cars of the same team good or bad at the same thing, regardless of the driver.
Fernando Alonso made a similar point in Hungary: drivers have never had full control, and some teams have always started better because of their systems. The difference now is scale. Because electrical power is so large, the consequence of a small calibration error is bigger, especially at tracks like Spa and Silverstone.
Bortoleto’s argument is that the solution is not to remove the tools, but to master them. That means closer work with engineers, more time in the simulator learning not just the racing line but the energy logic, and accepting that real wheel-to-wheel learning only happens in races, not in isolation.
“Racing is racing and you can only learn about it when you are fighting other people. In the simulator it is difficult to simulate overtakes and things like this because you are doing it by yourself. You don’t have any cars around you,” he said in Miami.
“But you can always learn the concept of the overtakes. How to use the energy button, how to not use it, how to save it, where to not use it because then you are going to get overtaken in the next race.”
Are The Fast Drivers Still Fast?
The most concrete part of Bortoleto’s defense is empirical. If the 2026 rules had truly randomized performance, you would expect the established order to collapse. You would expect drivers who were slow in 2025 to suddenly be quick, and quick drivers to be slow.
That has not happened.
“Well, do you see Verstappen being slow? Do you see a seven-time world champion being slow this year? Do you see Leclerc being slow? I don’t see them being slow, I still see them very competitive, so I wouldn’t say fast drivers are slow,” Bortoleto said in Hungary. “Actually Lewis is a bit better than he was doing last year,
Max is still performing like crazy, putting that car on the top, Lando, the reigning world champion, is still quick when his thing doesn’t break… I don’t think we have seen slow drivers last year becoming quick and the quick guys slow, I think it’s still racing.”
The first half of the season supports him. Through the British and Belgian Grands Prix, the sharp end of the grid has remained familiar. Verstappen has dragged an often difficult Red Bull into podium contention. Lewis Hamilton, in his second year with Ferrari after a painful 2025, has looked more comfortable and has been consistently in the fight for top-five qualifying spots. Charles Leclerc has been a regular front-row threat.

Lando Norris, despite McLaren reliability issues, has shown the pace that won him the 2025 title. The breakout star has been Mercedes junior Kimi Antonelli, who took pole at Silverstone and won at Spa, but he is widely regarded as a generational talent whose speed would translate in any era.
In other words, car performance still dominates, as it always has, and driver performance within that still follows known patterns.
What has changed is that the window to extract that performance is narrower. Leclerc’s observation that pushing beyond the limit is less rewarding is accurate. In the past, a small lock-up or a moment of wheelspin cost a tenth.
Now it can cost energy that costs three tenths on the next straight. That rewards precision and punishes overdriving. For drivers whose natural approach is highly aggressive on entry, that feels like a constraint. For Bortoleto, that is simply a different definition of precision.
Why Bortoleto’s Voice Carries Weight Right Now
Bortoleto is not speaking as a frontrunner defending an advantage. Audi’s 2026 car, the R26, has been publicly described by team boss Mattia Binotto and designer James Key as a solid chassis hampered by a new power unit still being understood. Peter Sauber himself noted before Hungary that starting with a new engine formula and a massively expanded workforce in Hinwil is not easy, and that harmony matters more than headline results in year one.
In that context, Bortoleto’s two eighth places are meaningful. At Silverstone, Audi timed its strategy well and managed tyre and energy usage to stay in contention when others faded. At Spa, a race where energy management was expected to be even more severe, he again brought the car home in the points while his more experienced teammate Nico Hulkenberg finished outside them.
The team noted after Spa that his ability to maintain competitive lap times while conserving resources in the high-speed middle sector showed a growing synergy with the package.
He also has no legacy to protect. Drivers who raced the previous generation at its peak of development naturally compare everything to that reference. Bortoleto grew up watching the hybrid era but did not spend five years perfecting his craft in those cars. For him, 2026 is not a betrayal of what Formula 1 should be. It is simply what Formula 1 is.
That generational difference was evident when he confirmed in Hungary that his future with Audi is locked in for many years on a multi-year deal, and he spoke about building toward victories in the future rather than lamenting the present.
That long-term outlook explains why he is so insistent on language. If you start telling yourself you have a fixed style that this car does not suit, you stop looking for solutions. If you tell yourself you have to adapt to any car, you keep looking.
What This Means For How We Judge Drivers
If Bortoleto is right, the way we evaluate drivers in this era should shift slightly but not fundamentally.
Raw qualifying pace still matters, but it must be measured against energy execution. A driver who is two tenths faster in the first sector but empties the battery doing it will look slow at the end of the lap, not because he is slow, but because he mismanaged.
Race craft still matters, but it now includes energy state awareness: knowing when not to attack because you need to save for two laps later, or knowing when your opponent is vulnerable because his deployment map is different.
It also elevates the engineering relationship. In 2026, the driver-engineer loop about software maps, deployment targets, and recovery settings is as important as the conversation about mechanical balance. The driver who can give precise, repeatable feedback about where the car felt weak on power versus where it felt unpredictable will help the team refine the algorithm faster.
None of that replaces car control. Through Copse at 280 km/h, still lifting, still trusting the grip, the physical and mental load is undiminished. It is just overlaid with a new cognitive layer.
Formula 1 has been here before. When ground effect returned in 2022, drivers complained about porpoising and visibility. When hybrids arrived in 2014, they complained about torque and fuel saving.
When refueling was banned, they complained about tyre management. In each case, the sport’s best adapted first, and then the narrative changed from what was lost to what was learned.
Bortoleto’s contribution is to remind the paddock that adaptation itself is the elite skill. The 2026 regulations have not removed the need for talent. They have made the need for adaptability more visible on every straight and in every braking zone. The drivers who are quick now were quick before, not because the cars suit them, but because they are quick at learning what the car needs.
As the field heads into the summer break and toward tracks like Zandvoort and Monza where energy demands will be completely different again, that capacity to learn will be tested anew.
The cars will continue to evolve, the software will get smarter, and the balance will shift toward 60-40 in the coming years. The conversation will not stop. But if Bortoleto’s view prevails, it will be a conversation about how drivers solved the new puzzle, not whether the puzzle should exist at all.
