Marko Unveils Bold Truth on Red Bull’s F1 Future
Helmut Marko has never been known for softening the truth. Now speaking from outside the official Red Bull Racing structure for the first time in more than two decades, the 83-year-old Austrian has given his most detailed public assessment yet of where his former team stands in the 2026 Formula 1 season. It is not an optimistic picture, but it is a coherent one.
In comments that capture both technical and human realities, Marko identified three interlocking problems that define Red Bull’s current campaign: a car that cannot deliver its performance consistently, a working dynamic between Max Verstappen and the engineering group that is not functioning at its best, and a platform that remains fundamentally unstable against two rivals who have found a more complete understanding of the new regulations. He also made clear that he does not expect a repeat of the extraordinary late-season recovery that defined Red Bull’s 2025 season.
“They are not consistently fast,” Marko said. “Moreover, things don’t seem to be running entirely smoothly between Max and the engineers.”
On Verstappen’s future, his conclusion was personal rather than analytical: “I sincerely hope that he stays.”
Taken together, the remarks offer a diagnostic view of a team in transition. This is not a team that has forgotten how to build a fast Formula 1 car. The RB22 has shown flashes of genuine competitiveness. It is a team that has not yet learned how to make that competitiveness repeatable, predictable, and usable for its lead driver every single weekend.
Why Marko’s voice still matters
To understand the weight of those sentences, context is important. Marko stepped down from his formal role as motorsport advisor to Red Bull at the end of 2025, closing a chapter that began when Red Bull first entered Formula 1. In that time he oversaw the junior programme that produced Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo, Max Verstappen and a generation of Grand Prix winners. He was inside the engineering briefings, the driver meetings, the difficult strategic calls that turned a drinks company into a four-time double world championship team and then, in the ground era, into the most dominant force the sport had seen in years.
His departure was part of a wider organisational reshuffle at Milton Keynes and Salzburg following a period of internal turbulence. He holds no operational responsibility today. That distance is precisely what makes his current assessment notable. He is no longer protecting a development programme, managing a driver market, or framing a message for sponsors. He is observing as an outsider with insider knowledge of how the team thinks, how Verstappen operates, and what a championship-contending structure should feel like when it is healthy.
When Marko talks about consistency, about driver-engineer chemistry, and about car stability, he is not reaching for generic punditry. He is naming the three pillars that Red Bull’s own methodology has always rested on.
The central problem: pace that comes and goes
“The lack of consistent speed is the most expensive problem a team can have under these regulations,” Marko’s first point suggests, and the 2026 rulebook explains why.
The 2026 cars represent the biggest technical reset in more than a decade. The chassis regulations have shifted the aerodynamic philosophy away from heavy ground-effect dependency toward a more balanced interaction between a simplified floor, active aerodynamics, and a completely new power unit that splits power almost evenly between internal combustion and electrical energy. That changes everything about how a car generates lap time. In that environment, a peaky car is a punitive car. Red Bull has been able to be quick. In qualifying trim at certain circuits with smooth asphalt and a narrow temperature range, the RB22 has looked like a pole contender. In race trim on a different circuit, with higher degradation or gusting wind, that same car has slipped into the middle of the top ten, struggling with understeer in slow corners and sudden oversteer in high-speed direction changes.
For a team, that variability creates a cascade of problems. If performance swings by six or seven tenths depending on the venue, it becomes extremely difficult to understand whether a new front wing or floor upgrade has actually worked. In modern Formula 1, the relationship between driver and engineering group is not about morale. It is a technical system. Verstappen is known for an extremely precise and demanding feedback style. He identifies balance shifts in fractions of a percent, he can distinguish between a limitation caused by mechanical grip, aerodynamic platform, or power unit deployment, and he expects the car to respond in a linear, predictable way when changes are made. When that expectation is met, as it was for much of 2022 and 2023, the development loop accelerates. Verstappen pushes, the engineers respond, confidence builds, and the car becomes faster because the driver trusts it enough to explore the last hundredth.
When that loop is disrupted, progress slows disproportionately. If the driver reports instability under braking and the data suggests the issue is tyre temperature rather than aero map, there is a debate to be had. If the driver asks for more front-end rotation and the set-up change intended to deliver it instead creates rear instability in high-speed corners, trust erodes. None of this implies argument or personal conflict. It is the normal friction of elite engineering. But in a season where the car is already sensitive, even small misalignments in interpretation can cost a tenth or two per lap, which is enough to move from fighting for a podium to fighting for minor points.
Marko has seen this dynamic at both ends of the spectrum. He watched it work at its absolute best when Red Bull and Verstappen were extracting performance that rivals could not explain. He is now observing a phase where that same mechanism appears to be under strain. His phrasing is careful. He does not say who is right or wrong. He simply notes that the smoothness is missing. For a team trying to understand a new generation of cars, that smoothness is not a luxury. It is the mechanism by which understanding is created.
What instability really means
Marko’s third key term is perhaps the most technical: “the car is too unstable.”
In the paddock, unstable does not only mean oversteery or nervous. It means unpredictable. A stable Formula 1 car may still have understeer or oversteer, but its behaviour changes in a linear, understandable way as fuel load drops, tyres degrade, or the driver adjusts brake balance and differential settings. An unstable car does not. Its balance can shift suddenly from one corner to the next. It may feel planted for ten laps and then lose rear grip without warning as the tyre surface temperature crosses a threshold. It may be sensitive to a two-degree change in track temperature or a small gust of wind on an exposed straight.
For Verstappen, whose driving style is built on an exceptionally aggressive initial turn-in and a confidence in the front axle that allows him to carry minimum speed deep into the corner, that unpredictability is particularly costly. When he cannot trust what the rear will do on entry, he has to leave margin. When he leaves margin, the lap time that separates him from drivers in more predictable machinery disappears.

Instability also complicates energy management, which is more critical than ever in 2026. McLaren and Ferrari have set a different standard
“The competition from McLaren and Ferrari is too strong,” Marko said, and the results of the first half of 2026 support him.
Both teams have arrived at a different compromise under the new rules. McLaren has built on the momentum it carried through 2024 and 2025, producing a car that appears to generate its downforce with less sensitivity to ride height change. That gives its drivers a wider set-up window and better tyre management across a race. Ferrari, after several seasons of strong qualifying pace without equivalent race-day consistency, appears to have solved much of its degradation puzzle, with a power unit integration that allows smoother deployment out of low-speed corners.
The consequence is that Red Bull is no longer operating in a vacuum where it can afford a difficult weekend and recover through sheer development rate. In 2022 or 2023, a fifth-place finish could be absorbed because the car advantage would return at the next circuit type. In 2026, McLaren and Ferrari are close enough that a difficult weekend means losing significant ground to two teams, not one, and both are operationally sharp. Strategy, pit stops, and qualifying execution have been consistently high from Woking and Maranello. That leaves no room for a car that is only intermittently fast.
Why 2025 cannot be the template
It is natural to ask whether Red Bull can do what it did in 2025. Last year, after a troubled first half that left them adrift in both championships, the team produced one of the most impressive technical recoveries in recent memory. Through a sequence of floor, front suspension, and cooling updates introduced between the summer break and the final flyaway races, they transformed the RB21 from a temperamental midfield runner into a car that could challenge McLaren on pure pace. Verstappen dragged the team back into contention and took the fight to the final round in Abu Dhabi.
That story is powerful, but Marko is explicit that it should not be used as a blueprint.
“I certainly wouldn’t bet on that,” he said of a repeat.
His reasoning is grounded in difference, not defeatism. The 2025 recovery happened within a mature set of regulations where Red Bull understood the underlying aerodynamic concept intimately. The problems were specific and identifiable. The team had a large database of correlation to fall back on, and the performance of the car was limited by identifiable areas that could be addressed with targeted upgrades.
The 2026 problem is more fundamental. This is not about extracting the last three tenths from a known concept. It is about defining the concept itself. When the platform is unstable and the operating window is narrow, development becomes less linear. Teams can bring upgrades that work in the wind tunnel but fail to translate because the real-world behaviour of the car is still not fully mapped. In addition, the cost cap and aerodynamic testing restrictions mean that a team cannot simply out-develop rivals through sheer volume of parts. Every wind tunnel run must count, and if correlation is uncertain, those runs are less productive.
There is also a competitive mathematics problem. In 2025, Red Bull was chasing one team that had established an early lead. In 2026, even if Red Bull were to find half a second through development, it would need both McLaren and Ferrari to stagnate, which neither has shown any sign of doing. The path from fourth-fastest to fastest is steeper than the path from second-fastest to fastest, and it requires others to stop improving.
The Verstappen question
Marko’s final comment, “I sincerely hope that he stays,” lands differently from the rest of his analysis because it is explicitly personal.
Verstappen’s contract situation has been a permanent sub-plot for two years. He remains under contract to Red Bull, but Formula 1 contracts at his level always contain performance and exit mechanisms, and the sport has learned not to treat any long-term deal as unbreakable. More importantly, drivers of Verstappen’s stature make decisions based on competitiveness. He has been loyal to Red Bull since he was 16, and that loyalty has been rewarded with four world championships and an environment built around his strengths. What comes next for Red Bull
If Marko’s diagnosis is correct, Red Bull’s response in the coming months will need to focus on three parallel tasks.
The first is technical stabilisation. That means prioritising upgrades that widen the operating window rather than simply adding peak load. It may mean accepting a small loss in maximum downforce in order to gain predictability, better tyre management, and a more linear response to set-up changes. It will require intense work on correlation, with trackside experiments designed not to produce lap time on the day but to produce understanding that pays off over five races.
The second is process. The driver-engineer feedback loop must be made as frictionless as possible. That often involves structure rather than personnel: ensuring that the same core group of engineers works with Verstappen weekend to weekend, that data is presented in a way that matches his feedback style, and that decisions about set-up direction are made early enough to allow proper testing. Small organisational changes can unlock performance when the car is sensitive.
The third is managing expectations. Under previous regulations, Red Bull could afford to talk about winning every weekend. In 2026, a more measured public approach, focused on learning and steady accumulation of points, may actually reduce pressure on the technical team and allow more rational development choices. Marko’s own tone in these comments models that approach: direct, unembellished, willing to say that a comeback is unlikely.
None of this precludes strong individual results. Formula 1 history is full of teams that won races with unstable cars on circuits that suited them. Red Bull may still win in 2026. But Marko’s assessment suggests that the gap between occasional victory and sustained championship challenge is larger than it appears from the outside, and that closing it will require more than a single upgrade package.
For a team that spent much of the last decade defining the standard for others to chase, that is an unfamiliar position. It is also a familiar one for Marko, who has lived through Red Bull’s lean years as well as its dominant ones. His assessment does not write off the season. It simply refuses to pretend that the difficulties are small, temporary, or unrelated.
