MADRID, 13 September 2026 — The stopwatch said Formula 1’s first qualifying session at the Madring could not have been closer. Lando Norris took pole for McLaren with a final lap that edged Kimi Antonelli by just 0.011s, with Max Verstappen 0.140s off the ultimate pace in third, followed by Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc inside two tenths. It was the kind of compressed, high-stakes top five that usually guarantees a chaotic Sunday.
Verstappen, a four-time world champion with more than a decade of experience in extracting overtakes from places where overtakes should not exist, chose not to talk about the gaps. He talked about geometry.
On the eve of the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix at Madrid’s hybrid street-and-permanent circuit, Verstappen offered a forensic, driver-led critique of the track itself. His central thesis was blunt and technical at once: Madring, as laid out today, has almost no genuine place to pass, and the reason is baked into the design of its braking zones.
The Core Problem: Nowhere to Put the Car
“I still need to figure out a corner where to pass,” Verstappen said in the post-qualifying press conference. The line was not delivered for effect. He then expanded it into a race prediction.
Even if you are quicker than the car ahead, he explained, you cannot execute. The overtake has to be manufactured elsewhere. “There are no corners where you can pass, so you need to rely on people degging very aggressively.”

That word — degging, short for tyre degradation — has already defined the weekend. Through Friday practice, long-run simulations showed every team sliding into high thermal degradation on both medium and soft compounds. The surface is new, it is abrasive in places, and ambient temperatures around the IFEMA fairgrounds have pushed rear tyre surface temperatures beyond the optimal window after just six or seven push laps. Verstappen’s point was that degradation, not a clean, wheel-to-wheel move, will be the only mechanism for a position change.
For a driver whose career has been built on late-braking moves into heavy stops, the admission is significant. It reframes Sunday from a contest of who can out-brake whom into a contest of who can keep the tyres alive long enough to be there when the car ahead falls off the cliff.
Why the Braking Zones Don’t Work
Verstappen’s most valuable insight was not about tyres at all, but about vehicle dynamics. He isolated a specific design choice that recurs around the 5.414-kilometre, 22-corner layout.
In most of Madring’s overtaking candidates, the driver must brake and steer at the same time. The approach to the corner is not straight; it is already curving left or right, which means the car arrives in a state of combined load. The front tyres are being asked to decelerate the car and to turn it simultaneously.
From a racing perspective, that kills the overtake for two reasons that any race engineer will recognize instantly.
First, the combined load drastically reduces the stability margin under braking. When you are turning while braking, the front tyre’s longitudinal grip budget is already partially consumed by lateral force. If a chasing driver tries to brake even five metres later, the front locks, the car understeers wide, and the move collapses. The lead driver does not need to defend aggressively; physics defends for him.
Second, it collapses the track to a single line. On a conventional straight-line braking zone, a following driver can move off the racing line, take a slightly different angle, and try to get alongside before the apex. When the braking zone itself is curved, there is only one arc that keeps the car balanced. If you deviate from it, you lose downforce, you lose grip, and you lose the corner. The driver ahead can simply place his car in the middle of that narrow corridor and the discussion is over.
“For the braking zones, they need to learn that it should never be that you have to steer and combine that under braking. It doesn’t allow any kind of overtaking,” Verstappen said.

He contrasted it with a circuit he has often praised for racing quality, the Circuit of the Americas in Austin. At COTA, the big overtaking spots — Turn 1, Turn 12 — feature wide entries and braking zones that are either straight or only very gently curved. That width and linearity invites a driver to arrive side-by-side. It allows two different lines to co-exist into the same apex, which is the precondition for any real battle on the exit. Madring, as currently profiled, rarely offers that invitation.
A Constructive Critique, Not a Dismissal
What made Verstappen’s intervention land differently from a standard driver complaint was its constructive tone. He did not call for Madrid to be removed or for street circuits to be abandoned. He has made no secret in the past that he prefers historic, high-speed venues like Spa-Francorchamps, but here he separated his personal preference from his technical assessment.
He was complementary about the execution of the project. The organisers, he noted, have delivered a visually impressive and operationally smooth event on a very tight timeline. The asphalt, laid only months ago, has good initial grip and consistency, even if he observed that “in some places it’s already a bit too bumpy for a new track.” That is not unusual for a new street-hybrid venue where the sub-base includes public road sections around Valdebebas and the IFEMA complex, but it adds another layer of complexity for the ground-effect cars that are extremely sensitive to vertical stiffness.
He also acknowledged the ambition of the signature features. The centrepiece, La Monumental, is a long, banked right-hander designed to compress the cars into the track and create a natural amphitheatre for 45,000 fans. Drivers have described a physical sensation of extra load through the banking, followed by a compromise: you cannot take it flat without draining the battery deployment needed for the subsequent 700-metre straight where speeds will approach 340 km/h. In the current energy management formula, every driver will have to lift slightly in the Monumental to save electrical energy, which further reduces any slingshot opportunity.
Verstappen’s frustration was not with ambition, but with avoidability. “I know people always come and say ‘yes, but the space,’ but that’s BS. There’s always a way to find an overtaking opportunity on a track,” he said. He then made an offer that circuit designers rarely receive from a reigning champion in a press conference: “Almost all the braking zones! If you give me the track map, I’ll sort it out.”

On a more formal level, he said he would be willing to work with the FIA and the circuit architects to revise the profiles. That is a meaningful offer. Modern track design is typically led by simulation and by safety and commercial constraints. Driver input often arrives late, when kerbs are already poured and walls are already up. Verstappen argued for inverting that process, bringing drivers into the design loop earlier, when a five-metre shift in a braking reference can be the difference between a procession and a race.
The Car Killer Narrative and Why It Matters
The weekend’s narrative had been building before Formula 1 arrived. During initial Formula 3 testing earlier this year, the layout produced multiple red flags and a high count of damaged floors and suspension assemblies. Williams Team Principal James Vowles described it at the time as a “car killer,” a phrase that quickly travelled through the paddock.
Verstappen was asked about the label directly. He did not fully endorse it, but he did not dismiss it either. He said the circuit “probably is a car killer from what I’ve seen so far,” then added the driver’s caveat: you have to stay off the walls and get the maximum from the car anyway.
The comparison that has surfaced most often is Jeddah. Like the Corniche Circuit, Madring has high-speed sequences with limited run-off and walls that punish even small misjudgements. The difference is in the low-speed character. In Jeddah, the low-speed sections are relatively open. In Madrid, several low-speed corners are tight, off-camber, and feature aggressive kerb profiles designed to enforce track limits. A small lock-up or a slightly early throttle application that would be forgiven with a wide tarmac run-off elsewhere becomes an instant front-wing endplate or floor-edge loss here.
Support categories have already illustrated that. Both Formula 2 and Formula 3 sessions at IFEMA produced crashes that, while without serious injury, highlighted how narrow the margin is. Formula 1 practice and qualifying have been cleaner, a reflection of both car control and team discipline, but race engineers up and down the pit lane are factoring in a high probability of Safety Car interventions.
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has framed that risk as part of the appeal, describing Madring as a track that will punish errors and reward the best combination of driver and car. That view does not actually contradict Verstappen’s technical point. A circuit can be punishing and still not produce overtaking. In fact, the more punishing it is, the less likely drivers are to risk a low-percentage dive when the geometry already tells them it will not stick.
The Paddock Is Not Alone in Its Reading
Verstappen was the most articulate voice, but not the only one. Franco Colapinto, who had spoken extensively with Formula 3 drivers after their running, echoed the braking-while-turning problem, noting that the junior drivers had flagged the same lack of a clean reference for an overtake attempt.
Lando Norris, who will start from the best possible position to control the race, raised a separate but related operational issue: the pit lane. Madring’s pit lane is unusually long, routing around the back of the permanent paddock to preserve access roads for the IFEMA exhibition centre. Verstappen agreed with Norris’ assessment that the time loss for a stop is significantly larger than average, which will shape strategy.

When a pit lane is long, the undercut — stopping earlier to use fresh tyre pace to jump a car ahead — becomes much more expensive. Teams need a larger tyre delta to make it work. That pushes strategists toward either committing very early or extending and hoping for a Safety Car. Both are conservative choices that tend to reduce on-track passing rather than increase it.
What Madring Actually Is
To understand why Verstappen’s comments carry weight beyond this weekend, it helps to place Madring in context. This is Formula 1’s first race in the Spanish capital since Jarama hosted the Grand Prix in 1981, a gap of 45 years. The project, led by IFEMA Madrid and a consortium of city and regional partners, stitches together public roads around the Valdebebas business district with bespoke permanent sections built specifically for racing.
The numbers define the challenge. At 5.414 kilometres it is one of the longer hybrid layouts on the calendar. Twenty-two corners make it one of the busiest, with an official race distance of 57 laps. The lap blends fast, flowing changes of direction in the permanent section with 90-degree, wall-lined corners in the street section, plus elevation changes of more than 20 metres that were not fully captured in the simulators teams used before arrival. With limited pre-event tyre testing and no prior Formula 1 data, every team arrived effectively blind on set-up.
That lack of historical data is part of why qualifying was so tight at the front. Norris, Antonelli and Verstappen, plus Hamilton and Leclerc, were covered by less than two tenths, suggesting that car performance is more compressed than usual. In a normal circuit, that compression would promise a race-long fight. At Madring, Verstappen argues, it will make the field even more sensitive to track position, because once you are stuck behind a car of similar pace with no place to pass, your tyres overheat in dirty air and you fall into the degradation trap.
How Sunday Could Still Deliver
None of this means the race is predetermined. If anything, the variables Verstappen highlighted create a highly volatile strategic picture.
Practice data pointed to significant graining on the front-left, particularly through the long right-hand sequences that load the tyre for extended periods. If graining appears early, teams may be forced into a two-stop or even a three-stop race, even with the penalty of the long pit lane. A three-stop would create tyre-offset battles in the final 15 laps, where a car on fresh softs could be two seconds a lap quicker than a car trying to nurse old hards to the finish. That is exactly the “degging very aggressively” scenario Verstappen described as the only path forward.

The Safety Car is the other great equalizer. With walls close and kerbs capable of breaking suspension, the probability of a neutralisation is high. A well-timed Safety Car would wipe out the pit lane time loss and bunch the field, giving drivers a free tyre change and a chance to attack on the restart. On a track where passing is hard, restarts — with cold tyres and concertina effects — may actually be the best overtaking opportunity of all.
Energy management will also play a role. In the current generation of power units, drivers cannot deploy full electrical energy on every straight. They must harvest and prioritize. Madring’s layout forces a choice: deploy early to defend into the Monumental complex, or save for the main straight that leads into the heavy braking zone at Turn 1. That tactical decision could create speed differentials of 10-12 km/h at the end of the straights, which is enough to at least get alongside, even if the subsequent corner geometry makes it hard to stay there.
A Larger Debate About the Calendar’s Direction
Verstappen’s comments resonate because they touch a tension that has been growing as Formula 1 expands into new markets. New venues are often chosen for a combination of commercial appeal, city-centre spectacle, and logistical convenience. Those are legitimate factors for a global sport. But they can conflict with the pure racing criteria that drivers and engineers care about: straight braking zones, multiple lines, corners that reward bravery on entry and traction on exit.
The Dutchman’s offer to mark up a track map is not a throwaway line. It is a proposal for a different workflow, one in which active drivers with recent experience of wheel-to-wheel combat in ground-effect cars are consulted at the CAD stage, not after the asphalt is laid. The FIA already uses driver advisory input for safety changes. Extending that to racing quality — asking where a braking zone could be straightened by three degrees, where an apex could be opened by a metre to create a second line — would be a low-cost, high-return change.
It would also help avoid the pattern where a new circuit debuts to spectacular drone shots and packed grandstands, but the racing itself is processional until a redesign two years later. Austin, Bahrain and even Baku have all undergone minor layout tweaks after driver feedback. Madring, with its permanent sections still malleable and its public-road sections constrained by existing infrastructure, is a prime candidate for that kind of iterative evolution.
The debut weekend has already achieved its primary goals off-track. Spanish motorsport has a home Grand Prix in its capital for the first time in a generation. Carlos Sainz is racing in front of a home crowd that has not had this chance before, Fernando Alonso adds historical continuity, and the presence of figures from La Liga and Spanish culture has underlined the event’s significance beyond the paddock. The grandstands are full, the organization has been praised, and the visuals of cars threading between exhibition halls at 300 km/h are undeniably striking.
The lasting measure, however, will be the racing. As Verstappen framed it, circuit design is not primarily an architectural exercise or a commercial exercise. It is a racing exercise. The angle of a wall, the camber of an apex, the decision to curve a braking zone by five metres — those details determine whether 20 of the best drivers in the world can race each other or can only manage tyres in line astern.

Sunday’s 57 laps will provide the first real data point. If the race becomes a strategic chess match decided by who best preserves rubber and who benefits from a timely Safety Car, Verstappen’s technical indictment will have been proven correct in real time. If, against expectations, drivers find a way to make moves stick in places the simulator said were impossible, Madring will have shown a capacity for adaptation that no drawing could predict.
Either way, the conversation Verstappen started is unlikely to end in Madrid. By articulating a precise, testable problem and volunteering to be part of the solution, he has shifted the debate from complaint to development. For a sport that prides itself on continuous technical evolution of its cars, applying the same mindset to its circuits feels like the logical next step.
