In a decisive move that reshapes its technical leadership for the current and next regulatory cycle, BWT Alpine Formula One Team has appointed Mike Elliott as its new Chief Technical Officer. The team confirmed the appointment on 17 September 2026, ending Elliott’s three-year absence from Formula 1 following his departure from Mercedes-AMG Petronas at the end of 2023.
The role is newly created and will be based full-time at Alpine’s technical centre in Enstone, Oxfordshire. Elliott will assume overall responsibility for the team’s technical and engineering operations, providing strategic direction across aerodynamic development, vehicle performance, design, simulation, and long-term research programmes. He is expected to begin work at Enstone next week, in the immediate build-up to the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku.
For Alpine, the hire is both symbolic and structural. It brings back to Enstone an engineer who served as its principal aerodynamicist between 2008 and 2012, during the team’s iterations as Renault and Lotus, and who subsequently became a central figure in one of the most dominant periods in the sport’s modern history at Mercedes.
