He also acknowledged he’s been on the other side of this exact equation before, saying he’s “probably won” races from favourable Safety Car or VSC timing in the past.
Antonelli, celebrating his eighth win of the season, was candid for a race winner, saying the victory “doesn’t feel as good” because he believed Norris deserved to win. Zak Brown, McLaren’s chief executive, said the VSC periods were “cruel” to Norris and described him as “a league of his own” on pace that day — a view supported by the underlying lap-time data, where Norris had the strongest long-run pace before the neutralisation.
The reason those remarks matter is that they remove the usual accusation of sour grapes. When the winner, the loser, and the losing team’s boss agree on the underlying performance order, the conversation can move from outcome to mechanism.

A minimum VSC duration. For example, the VSC remains active until every car has passed the pit entry once after deployment, whichever is longer than the time needed to clear the hazard. This doesn’t equalise tyre age or strategy, but it equalises opportunity.
Pit-lane delta equalisation. One proposal would adjust the minimum pit-lane time based on VSC status at entry, so a car pitting under green just after a VSC ends doesn’t lose the full time penalty compared with a car that pitted during the VSC itself.
